So I was sitting in my office one day a few weeks ago while I was "supposed" to be working, but watching football instead. I received a text from my friend Preach Jacobs, a DJ friend of mine who spins at spots all over the city and across the country. He asked if I'd be interested in starting a Columbia chapter of Drink and Draw at our local Art Bar, where he spins on Sundays. After YEARS of trying to get one off the ground with other artists over the years, this opportunity sounded a bit more promising.
Wait... let's go back...
I was introduced to drink and draw at a comic con I was at in the early 2000's. The concept was a couple of us comic book artists sit around while we drank beer and other alcoholic beverages and do what we do best as we got trashed. The idea was genius to me because at these conventions, we comic artists usually would meet at the bar after the show, grab a bite, and get hammered for the rest of the night. Then as some point, someone would pull out a sketchbook... and the rest is history. The more we cons we went to, the more we would see these get togethers evolve into something more.
Drink and Draw chapters started popping up all over the country. City to city, Comic artists were taking part in the perfect marriage between their two favorite pastimes... drawing and getting smashed. Each chapter brought something different to the table from the last one. For example, one city may have more contest driven themes with prizes and such. While others just treat it as a reason for artists to sit around and show off their skills or what they're working on for various companies. Some use this a networking tool between artists and possible clients. My take on it... we make it a little bit of all of these things.
My take on this chapter is based on when the Drink and Draw event will take place. As of now, each Drink and Draw will coincide with a theme party hosted by Preach. The theme of that party will be the Drink and Draw theme. As for right now, all artists will bring their own materials and we will engage in an artistic event that revolves around that party. As this goes on,artists can link up and network with other artists. And sometime in the future, incorporating contests with prizes given to the artists involved.
The first Drink and Draw in Columbia will come on January 31st at Art Bar. That party's theme is the 90's, so this drink and draw theme is going to be, Favorite Hip Hop artists of the 90's. Artists would then used the materials they brought along and give their take on the theme. A time limit was originally attached, but then that stipulation changed since there's no challenge or contest. Artist will draw at their own pace or as long as the alcohol allows them to.
So if you are in the Columbia, SC area, Preach Jacobs and myself will present to you, the first meeting of the Columbia chapter of Drink and Draw at the 90's party, January 31st at Art Bar, 1211 Park St., 29201.
