A few weeks ago I invited some of my closest friends over to record a podcast and also to enjoy a small Christmas dinner as a family. One of those friends brought a BlueRay for me to watch as soon as I could. Which movie it was you ask? Serenity. I asked him if this was part of that whole "Firefly thing" to which he replied "yes". Then I asked "should I watch Firefly first" to which he replied "it would be preferable but you can just watch the movie if you want to". I decided to watch it like it was intended, so I was going to watch the entire Firefly series and then I'd watch Serenity.
First of all, the series looked amazing! The special effects were movie level quality, the environments were vastly different from each other, the storyline kept us entertained and intrigued throughout the entire series, the concepts were varied, and the characters... oh man; the characters is what sold the series to us! First let's start with the team leader/captain/heart of the group, Captain Malcom "Mal" Reynolds played by Nathan Fillion. The fastest way I can describe him to anyone that hasn't seen the series is that he's basically Han Solo with a kinder heart. Then we have the second in command on board ship, Zoe. You want a badass female role model for young and old women alike, Zoe fills that role to perfection. Then her husband and the pilot of Serenity, Hoban "Wash" Washburne. This is one of my favorite characters in the series because he's fun, funny but he's not to be messed with behind the controls of that ship. Then there's Inara (the companion), "Jane" (the mercenary), "Kaylee" (the mechanic), Derrial Book (the Sheppard), Dr. Simon Tam (the doctor) and River Tam... the cause of their beaches and in time; the one who'd become their salvation. Talk about a diverse cast of characters and personalities. I mean, there's literally a character for anyone to relate to. My verdict on this series is that it's quite possibly in my Top 5 tv series of all time. Not sic fi, not comic book or action series, ANY tv series; period. Then... there was Serenity.
